On March 22nd 2012, the first hearing regarding Actos has been scheduled and it will take place in Lafayette, Louisiana under U.S. District Judge Rebecca Doherty. Actos is a popular medication used to control Type 2 diabetes, approved by the FDA in 1999 and it is allegedly linked to an increased risk of bladder cancer and other severe side effects. On December 29th 2011, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) established an MDL (MDL 2299) for all federal claims alleging injury caused by Actos.
In November 15th 2011, a man filed the lawsuit Rochester v. Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Inc. in Napa County Superior Court, California (case no. 26-57618) alleging that he took Actos for a period of three years and subsequently was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Takeda Pharmaceuticals is the company manufacturing Actos. According to the lawsuit, Takeda knew about the link between Actos and bladder cancer, yet failed to warn patients. This Actos Side Effects lawsuit is part of the lawsuits coordinated in the Louisiana Superior Court.

Authorities in France and Germany banned sales of the drug but it still remains on the market in the United States.
